Hike Maarn

Bonus ponds

Lately, we have gotten a lot of rain. This is in stark contrast with the past few years. Nature is soaked with water. Because the groundwater level is already so high in The Netherlands, this has created plenty of extra ponds, or bonus ponds, as I call them.

As I hike, I sometimes come across them in the fields. And occasionally, they also take over the trails, making it challenging to get to the other side.

These bonus ponds create a transient landscape that I enjoy very much. The picture above shows beautiful bonus ponds across the fields and the trail, somewhere South of the Utrecht Hill Ridge (Utrechtse Heuvelrug) near the lovely village of Maarn, The Netherlands.
